The Motor Insurance Bureau, is a insurer funded organisation that exists to compensate motorists that have been involved in a non-fault accident with an Uninsured or Untraced Driver. The MIB has two schemes that offer compensation:-
The Untraced Drivers Agreement, this takes effect in hit and run type accidents when the other driver at fault for the accident leaves the scene. The rules on who to claim are very strict. For example, you must report an incident to the Police within 14 days, the incident must have arisen in the last 3 years and you must always keep losses to a minimum, while the accident must not have been your fault. Payouts are only payable for your injuries and associates losses under the Untraced drivers scheme.
The Uninsured Drivers Agreement, provides compensation when the other driver can be identified, and is Uninsured. Again the incident must have been reported to the police ( within 5 days ) and have arisen within 3 years. You can claim for your injury, as well as damage to your car , however there is a £300 excess that applies in this type of case.
